The Audio World Of Inspector Morse

A Review By Ellen Cheshire

Ellen Cheshire has done a review of Inspector Morse books on audio tapes published in Crime Time magazine (Issue 8). MCI Spoken Word market a series at £7.99 including Masonic Mysteries, Promised Land and Greeks Bearing Gifts which are basically the same as the television episode only without advertisments and with additional narration to set the scene. These “don’t work particularly well” but do last around 2 hours.

Far more praise is given to the dramatisation done by BBC Radio 4 who have issued the first three novels (Last Bus To Woodstock, Last Seen Wearing and The Silent World Of Nicholas Quinn). The leading parts are played by John Shrapnel (Death Is Now My Neighbour) and Robert Glenister in the latter two and Andrew Burt and Christopher Douglas in the first. Each lasts for 90 minutes.

Macmillan have also bought out their range of Morse tapes in an abridged 3 hour version including The Daughters Of Cain and Death Is Now My Neighbour. Each is read by Kevin Whatley and cost £7.99. Finally there is the Chivers’ complete unabridged range at £14.95 for 6 cassettes and £15.95 for 8 cassettes). The most recent release is The Dead Of Jericho read by Colin Dexter himself which last for around eight hours - a must for any enthusiast.
