The ‘Remorseful Weekend’ Report - Part II

Brakspear’s Brewery and Filming Locations
Saturday 30th. September 2000

A visit to a brewery would usually have members of the Morse Society licking their lips with great expectation. However, it was not until the Anadin had been passed around that morning that the coach was enlivened! One of the highlights of the brewery visit was, indeed, the journey itself. We sped through the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, bathed in glorious sunshine for an hour before we arrived at our destination.

When we arrived we were delighted to discover Morse’s very S-Type Jaguar parked on the forecourt! The next half an hour was spent sitting in the Jaguar, having one’s photograph taken and (in my case) pretending to drive it! The mere fact that John Thaw’s posterior had nestled into the driver’s seat, over the years, was enough to send some female Society members into a frenzy! Once we had prized Cynthia away from the upholstery we were treated to a tour of the brewery!

The tour itself was a humbling experience. The huge process involved in brewing will lead, I suspect, many of us to appreciate our ale that little bit more in the future. The tour was lead by Alan Lister, a highly experienced member of the Brakspear’s team, who was very informative and answered all of our enquiries with detailed insight.

We were delighted to have both Colin and Dorothy Dexter with us and Colin was called upon to unveil a plague commemorating the filming of SINS in the brewery. We were then, after many photographs, lead to the Brakspear’s shop where the brewery unveiled ‘Morse’s Bitter Endeavour’ (released to coincide with REMO). We sampled the ale and all agreed that it was a very nice drop! Some of us were lucky enough to buy a set of three ‘Morse’s Bitter Endeavour’ ales in a special presentation box. Each ale has a differently designed label and will surely grow in value; they are a wonderful addition to any Morse collection. (And still available, see pages 6 & 31! - Assistant Editor)

After our visit to the brewery we were ushered to the pub next door and treated to a delicious buffet lunch. After lunch some of us decided to rest in the bars and cafes of Henley (the previous night’s inequities catching up no doubt!) whilst the rest of the group wandered around the beautiful town of Henley. Amongst the sights we discovered were a quaint village church, Dusty Springfield’s grave and the impressive Leander Rowing Club (home to the Great Britain Olympic Rowing Team).

Later in the day we visited a church followed by the ‘Queen’s Head’ (Old Marlow) which doubled up for the “Maiden’s Arms’ in filming - the pub was at the centre of the plot in REMO and was heavily featured in the television adaptation.
