The ‘Remorseful Wake’

Report Of Event Held At The Randolph Hotel, Oxford
15th. November 2000

A small group of Morse enthusiasts took over a suite upstairs in the Randolph Hotel and (with heavy hearts) settled down to watch REMO.

We arrived to a champagne reception and for an hour mingled with members of the Inspector Morse production team and Colin Dexter himself. We were duly lead up to our suite and treated to a five-course meal. We tucked into ‘Dexter’s delight’ starter, ‘Morse’s favourite’ (roast beef with all the trimmings) and ‘Lewis’ special chocolate pudding’!

Antony, with a little help from a few others, managed to sell several raffle tickets (well quite a few!), both to the Society members and the people (124 in all) who had come from all over Britain to watch REMO in the downstairs dining area of the Randolph Hotel!

The wonderful waitresses in the upstairs bar managed to keep up with our beverage needs and after petit fours and coffee the video projector was set up and REMO began. We experienced a few technical hitches (someone stepping on the video cord!), but the viewing was atmospheric. After more wine and tears the credits rolled. There were mixed opinions about the quality of the television adaptation in comparison with Dexter’s book. Some felt that the most touching parts of the story (Morse covering up for Strange) were unnecessarily omitted from the programme whereas some thought it a wholly worthy adaption and a fitting end to Morse’s life.

After the discussions about the programme had died down and we had finished off the last of the wine we all headed our separate ways with a memorable and special evening etched into our consciousness that we will, I am sure, recall with fondness in years to come.
