In The Wake Of The Barbara Bray - Part II

Report of the meeting held at Eaton Lodge on 29th. July 2000

The distance between Oxfordshire (the spiritual home of the Society) and Staffordshire did not deter 19 members attending this event which investigated the real life murder of Christina Collins which took place on the Trent & Mersey Canal in Rugeley. Among our number were Ralph Barker (an established author who is working on a full length version of the Christina Collins murder), Ian Stuttard (who produced ‘The Last Morse’ documentary), and our special guest John Godwin (the author of ‘The Murder of Christina Collins’ - see page 32). Alas Colin Dexter was on holiday at the time and could not attend, but sent his apologies.

John Godwin and Colin Dexter share a pint at an earlier meeting

John Godwin’s excellent talk illustrated how the fictional work of Colin Dexter in WENC borrowed heavily (with full permission) on his own research. In fact the acknowlegements in WENC include mention of John Godwin’s booklet which Colin Dexter says inspired him to write the Inspector Morse novel in the first place. For those interested the similarities occur as follows:

For those observant enough the broadsheet which was sold in the streets of Stafford at the time the two men were hanged publically can be see in the opening scenes of WENC television production.
