The Remorseful Weekend 2000 - Sequel 2001

Having joined the Inspector Morse Society in the early part of 2000 we were very pleased to be able to attend the Remorseful Weekend in September 2000. As we were newcomers we did not know what to expect!

On Friday evening we assembled at the Randolph Hotel as instructed and met various other members of the society. Together with Mike Rossell we were directed to a minibus outside where a number of members were already aboard. Number one requirement was to order the first round of drinks, which were included in the cost of the weekend. Apart from two of the assembled number from the western extremities of the country, who ordered lager much to the derision of their fellow members, all orders were sensible and in keeping with the Morse tradition, the rest of the evening is recorded in the last newsletter.

The following morning when we assembled for the coach trip to Henley, Annika (now our Editor) announced to all and sundry that she had adopted us as her parents. This was greeted with shock by us and no little amusement by the other survivors of the previous evening. This proved a catalyst to a series of friendships between our ‘gang’ which resulted in the discovery that three of the ladies had birthdays in June. It was agreed that we would try to meet in June 2001 to celebrate all the birthdays, but in particular Annika’s 21st.

We took it upon ourselves to act as the intermediaries and with great help from Sandra, the meeting was arranged. There was a certain amount of difficulty due to said Editor posting her mobile phone down a pub loo, not having it cancelled and leaving a message service in operation. This caused considerable consternation and annoyance to ‘Pa’ who was trying desperately to get hold of ‘child’ to confirm the arrangements. As the date approached getting hold of her took on a new connation!

The date was set for 16th June. A day when it rained and the ‘Trooping of the Colour’, if it were not for British resolve, would probably have floated away. Fortunately, by the time we were due to meet in the evening the rain had stopped. The meeting under the Swiss clock in Leicester Square was followed by an adjournment to a nearby hostelry for pre-prandial drinks.

We then proceeded to the Immortals Chinese Restaurant in Shaftesbury Avenue where a splendid repast was enjoyed by all. The three birthday girls Annika, Sue and Carole were toasted, presents exchanged and the evening sped by.

Absentees were our president and founder who was unable to be with us due to a prior engagement murdering somebody, and Mike who was in Outer Mongolia. A letter from Mike was read to the assembled company.

When we came to leave fortunately there was still no rain and Sandra and Sue departed by cab to Waterloo station. Obtaining a cab for Cynthia proved more difficult and she was last seen heading out into the moonlight in a peddled rickshaw in the capable hands of a French girl peddler, which she not only survived but also enjoyed! The four remaining members of the party Annika, Matthew, Carole and John enjoyed a late night stroll along Regent Street before parting company at Oxford Circus with Annika and Matthew to catch the night bus home and John and Carole to get a cab back to their hotel.

It was a most enjoyable evening and thanks are due to the Inspector Morse Society for bringing us all together.
