Official Renaming of Chapters Bar

Those of you who have ever been to Oxford will surely have visited the Chapters Bar in the Randolph Hotel, which has featured in most of the Inspector Morse books and in several of the television films. It has always been a place where Morse has gone to ‘think and drink’ and once in a while entertain his lady friends.

Recently, in honour of the great man the Randolph Hotel made the decision to rename the Chapters Bar as the ‘Morse Bar’. The manager of the Randolph Hotel, Caius Wyncoll, explained the decision to rename the bar and was presented with an Inspector Morse limited edition silk tie on behalf of the Society. (I feel certain that at this point Antony would again want me to point out that the ties are still available from him at a very reasonable price!). Colin Dexter was, of course, the guest of honour and gave a short speech in which he remembered the filming of so many episodes of Morse. Colin was presented with two whisky glasses by Ailish Hurley (the now famous bar manager who has featured in the books and the film version of REMO). She explained that one was for home use, and the other for when Colin visits the hotel. Colin praised the Randolph Hotel for it’s enduring quality and atmosphere over the years and unveiled the commemorative plaque, before cutting the ribbon to officially open Oxford’s newest bar.
