Back To Basics Weekend Friday 14th September 2001 Oxford Pub Crawl We began, as usual in the pubs of Oxford on a highly co-ordinated walking pub crawl of Morse related pubs. Highly co-ordinated in the sense that the very first pub on the list was under new management and had had it’s name changed! No wonder we couldn’t find it! Some of the pubs on route included the Bear with its famous collection of ties, which cover the walls of the small but cosy inn and the Turf Tavern. The groups into which we had been divided briefly passed each other in the Turf Tavern and we were all pleased to see a number of people from the previous year’s weekend as well as many new faces who seemed to be enjoying the wide selection of beverages that Oxford has to offer! A large group managed to make it back to the Randolph Hotel in time for a nightcap, a smaller group managed to make it to the local Pizza Hut and scoff a large cheese and tomato pizza, while most retired to their beds with very rosy cheeks to get a good night’s sleep in preparation for Saturday’s events. I myself managed to stagger back to the new youth hostel and halfway up the stairs thought I was hallucinating when I thought I spied a massive pop art style picture of John Thaw on the landing of the first floor. No … before you all insinuate, it wasn’t a drunken mirage because it was still there in the morning alongside Winston Churchill and Oscar Wilde. It certainly brought a smile to my face to realise that the curmudgeonly Chief Inspector Morse is free to reside alongside our nation’s greatest leader and our nation’s most colourful playwright! |
